Chemistry Classwork
March 14 and 15, 2017
Students took the Chemistry Unit Test today.
Students took the Chemistry Unit Test today.
March 10 and 13, 2017
We will begin A-day classes with a quick demonstration of color change and the formation of a precipitate. Then the A-day students will get to experience a temperature change with a quick experiment. After this, all class both A-day and B-day will work on reviewing for the upcoming test. Click HERE for a link to a document with several review activities. You don't have to do everyone. You need to think about areas that you struggle and let that be your focus.

We will continue to practice balancing equations today. Students had 3 different worksheets that they could practice from. If you are in need of just some extra problems...Click HERE. If you want a little bit more of a challenge...Click HERE. (With this particular worksheet...you don't have to identify the different types of equations and you can completely skip Q# 6,12, and 18. If you are really proficient at this and want some problems that are going to make you think...Click HERE. For the test, you are responsible for the level of problems that you had on the worksheet from the previous class. Have fun and happy balancing!

1st block A-day and 4th block B-day....both started class today by completing the "Messing with Mixtures" lab from last class. All classes will turn in their lab today if they didn't turn it in last class. 3A, 4A, 1B and 3B all began with a warm-up reviewing elements, compounds and mixtures. After this, all classes completed the Chemistry Notes on Law of Conservation of Matter and Chemical Reactions. Click HERE for the notes. This can be found on page 89 in the notebook. This is the final piece to the chemistry unit. After the notes, students worked on a "Counting Atoms" worksheet. Click HERE for the worksheet. Once finished with that, students began working on the "Balancing Equations Practice". Click HERE for the worksheet. If the practice didn't get finished today, we will continue to work on it next class.

Wow...it is hard to believe that we are already in March. The end of year will be here before we know it...but remember it's not here yet! Today in class, students were given 10 min to complete the lab from last class and then they turned it in for a grade. The B-day students will be given 15 min due to the fact that they worked on the lab on the early release day and didn't have as much time. After the lab, students went to page 89 and worked on another section of notes...this section is on Mixtures and Solutions. They were given the final notes sheet to work on. Click HERE for the notes sheet. Click HERE for the notes. After the notes were complete, the students worked on the "Messing with Mixtures" lab. This involves chex mix and M&M's. Click HERE for the lab. 1st block A-day only completed the chex mix portion so they will complete the M&M and rest of lab next week.

- I want you to first fill-in the Physical and chemical changes and properties portion of your notes. Turn to page 89 and put THIS information there.
- I want you to look through the notes (click HERE) on density and write down important information. Work through the practice problems.
- I want you to work through THIS worksheet on physical and chemical changes, put the answers in your notebook. I would suggest writing the examples down so that you have something to study from.
- I want you to work through THIS worksheet of density problems. If you finish it, HERE are some more problems...they are a bit more challenging.
- If you complete all of the items above, start working on the Chemistry Unit Test Study Guide. Click HERE for the questions. I will be checking this the day of the test...which is March 15th for B-day.

Today we worked on Physical/Chemical Changes and Properties. We also practiced calculating density. (3A and 4A) watched Bill Nye Phases of Matter. The worksheet is below. The students took notes on Physical/Chemical Changes and Properties on page 89 in their notebook. Next, students created a FOLDABLE about density. Then, the students practiced density problems. They also completed a worksheet on Physical/Chemical Changes and Properties. They worked on THIS density worksheet. If they finished and checked the work above, they worked on some density challenge problems. Click HERE for the worksheet.

I am sorry that I am not here today. Here is the work that needs to be completed by the time I see you again. First, make sure that you have your NB complete up to page 102. If you don't know what this is, go to the table of contents button above and look for it. Next, you will need to take NOTES on the 3 states of Matter. There is a foldable. If there is a sub, get the foldable from them and fill in the missing information. If not, write the notes in your notebook on page 104. Then, you will need to take NOTES on the phase changes that matter undergoes. This will go on page 105. There isn't a worksheet for this...you will have to write it on page 105. After all of this is complete, you will watch Bill Nye Phases of matter. If you have a sub, they will give you the worksheet. This will go on page 106. If you don't have a sub, I want you to take notes on the video. Please be good and efficient with your time today.

Today the classes wrapped up the information on compounds. We reviewed the naming of compounds and then reviewed and completed the Great Combinations Worksheet (this may have been completed the previous class for some classes). If you need a copy of that worksheet, see below. We then ventured into matter. Students were given words on a piece of paper and they had to identify them as matter or not matter. Once they identified them, they had to come up with common characteristics of the matter items and the not matter items. We used these to develop a definition. Then, we completed a foldable on States of Matter. Click HERE for the notes. If you need the foldable, you will have to get it in class or create your own. From here, they had to draw out the State changes notes. Click HERE for the notes. We ended class watching Bill Nye Phases of Matter and filling in the worksheet given in class. You can get this worksheet from Mrs. Gebhardt.

In class today, students started class identifying elements based on their shell number and valence number. Click HERE for the worksheet. Next, students took the information from last class and completed a worksheet, the Periodic Puzzler. Click HERE for the worksheet. The students were given time to complete the Atomic Basics worksheet from last class. This has to be turned in for a grade. Then, the students learned how elements become compounds. The students learned how to name and write the new compound formed. Click HERE for the notes on naming. They then completed a practice on naming and writing chemical compounds. Click HERE for the practice. Finally, the students practiced writing chemical formulas with the Great Combinations WS. Click HERE for the worksheet. |

Today was a make-up snow-day. We split the blocks and I saw all 6 classes today. The main focus today was taking the element quiz that everyone has been studying so hard for. Before the quiz, I collected the flashcards. Once done with the quiz, students had some time to work on classwork from the previous class to make sure that they are caught up. |

In class today, we began with a pop quiz. If you were absent for it, you will need to make it up. After the quiz, the students took notes on "Determining Valence Electrons" and "How to Draw Bohr Diagrams". I have linked the two notes presentations. You will need to get the worksheets from class in order to fill in the information from the presentations. We spent time drawing Bohr diagrams. The final assignment called "Atomic Basics" is a review of atoms and Bohr.

If classes hadn't finished the notes through Ions/Compounds/Bohr, we finished those first. Next, students worked through some practice : Atomic Math Challenge and the Periodic Table Coloring. Both assignments are turned in for a grade. If students finished early they could work on some periodic table extension activities. Students received notes on Periodic Table Trends. They had to fill in their blank PT and then complete a set of questions on the back (if you need this, please see me). Here is a copy of the full set of NOTES...please understand that we are going to cover them a piece at a time so at this point we will not go any further than Ions/Compounds/Bohr.

Today in class we started with the Chemistry pre-test. This is used to let the students see what the material in the unit looks like as well as assessing what they already know and understand coming into this Unit. Next, students received the Element list that they will need to study for a quiz on Feb 17th. They will also have to create flashcards and turn this in on quiz day. Finally, students started to work through the chemistry unit notes. We stopped the notes after Ions/Compounds/Bohr. We will pick the notes back up in a week or two after they have practiced the first part.
